If you ask any single person how they like living in Madison, you will probably get a response something similar to, “I love it here, there are so many things to do, it’s a beautiful city, blah blah blah. It’s the best, except the dating scene sucks here big time."
"Oh, and the winters here suck, too."
You’ve heard it before because it’s true. The dating scene and winters do suck here.
Although I’ve got a lot to say about winter, I will keep this post related to the dating scene. I think you can broadly define your Madison dating options into four major pools.
College Kids Much like the script for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, dating a college kid may seem like a good idea on paper but the execution is going to be flawed. The sheer numbers of this awesome force of young people makes this a hard option to pass up, but deep down, you know the relationship is probably going to fail eventually. Different mindsets, the fact that they will probably move away after graduation, and the toll of going out four nights a week has on their bodies (Tanked Up Tuesday, Wasted Wednesday, and Thirsty Thursday are no longer viable weekly celebrations with a 40+ hour work week) make dating a college kid difficult at best.
Hippies I’ve got no problems with hippies. Many of my good friends are hippies. But I live on the West side so it’s hard to for me to be part of the Willy Street scene. I’ve heard good things though. If you have the means, go check it out.
Epic Employees I would wager that one out of every four people between 22 and 28 work at Epic’s Intergalatic Headquarters in Verona. Dating an Epic employee would be great except that place seems really clique-y. Like high school. Well, not exactly like high school, I couldn’t wear sweatpants at my high school. In any case, I think there’s a rule there that you can only date other Epic employees, so that option is out the window.
Everyone Else Then there is Everyone Else. I don’t know where meet to Everyone Else. if you are Everyone Else, where are you and what to you like to do? Are you in MAGNET? A Kickball league? A pumpkin patch (in the appropriate season, of course)? Some cool club I don’t know about? Help me out, if there isn’t a cool club out there, maybe we should start one.
Great Article! But you forgot about Messed Up Mondays. Man, I miss college... – Rob, Madison, Wi(11-11-08)
