Giving Honors

The Greater Madison AFP's Philanthropy Day will be held at the Overture Center for the Arts on November 7, 2008. Young professionals interested in learning about the area's nonprofit work are invited to the networking reception from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The spirit of giving is alive and well in Madison — and one group of professionals is determined to recognize it. On November 7, 2008, the Greater Madison Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) recognizes the contributions of area philanthropists during its annual Philanthropy Day lunch banquet.

"Philanthropy Day is an opportunity to celebrate the amazing friends and neighbors in our community," says Jennifer Karlson, chair of the AFP Philanthropy Day committee. "This includes donors and fundraisers, who work together to make the greatest impact on the nonprofits they support."

The annual luncheon honors awardees, nominated by community nonprofits, in seven categories: Outstanding Philanthropic Organization and/or Foundation, Outstanding Business/Corporation, Outstanding Fundraising Executive, Young Philanthropist, Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser, Outstanding Individual Philanthropist and Lifetime Achievement.

And don't think the honored philanthropists are limited to the well-heeled elite, who have the resources to donate millions. "We recognize people who give their money, time, energy and commitment," explains Judy Keel, president of Greater Madison AFP.

This year's Outstanding Youth Philanthropist award is the perfect example. Ten-year-old Katie Stevens volunteers with several nonprofits, including Lake City Church and Bridge Lake Point Waunona Neighborhood Center. She is the youngest award recipient in the event's 21-year history.

Stevens will be in good company with other remarkable past recipients, including NBC15 Anchor Mike McKinney, who was awarded the 2007 Giving Heart Award post-mortem, honoring his work as a reporter and impact on the community, and W. Jerome Frautschi. Frautschi was awarded the 1999 Community Visionary award for his role with the Overture Center for the Arts conception.

Philanthropy Day will be held at the Overture Center for the Arts on November 7, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Reservations for the luncheon have closed, but young professionals interested in learning about the area's nonprofit work are invited to the networking reception from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Greater Madison AFP is a local chapter of the international organization. Its mission is to advance philanthropy through education, training, and advocacy. To learn more about the Madison chapter visit http://afpmadison.afpnet.org/Home.aspx.
